June 2012 News

Welcome to our First Newsletter!

We have been working extremely diligently and hopefully effectively over the last few months to establish a “new beginnings” for one of the most recognisable tourist icons in not only the Kingdom of Lesotho but all Southern Africa – “The Highest Pub in Africa” – and a relatively short distance from Africa’s second highest mountain, Thabana Ntlenyana. We’re a hiking, horse riding, 4x4ing and motor biking wonderland – a uniqe destination perched on the edge of an escarpment within the Maluti Drakensberg Transfrontier Conservation Area – a Wold Heritage site - at the top of one of the most exciting world passes – Sani Pass – a “World’s Highlight” - (you need a passport to come up!).

But it has not been all a “bed of roses” (roses, for anyone in the know don’t grow at this altitude of 2 800 metres!). We were faced with the mission of “don’t change anything” – a warning by our most devoted clients – and provide the kind of lodge that most 21st century travellers – if the truth be known even adventure travellers want – a place of retreat with consistency; a place that has the facilities to make one’s break “comfortable” as well as being “awe inspiring”.

AND THIS IS WHAT WE HAVE BEEN FOCUSING ON – MOSTLY “BELOW GROUND” – out of sight – placing the “foundations of comfort” that honestly were in the past just a little lacking. We have now begun to upgrade our charming rondavels and public areas with furnishings and services that are making us proud to be called a “world hightlight”. We still have a long way to go but are working consistently at a satisfying pace, taking on board feedback and inputs from our guests.

We felt that there would not be a better place to relaunch what was previously known by thousands of local and international visitors as
“Sani Top Chalet” – into “Sani Mountain Lodge”. And we felt we had to be in the main high traffic venue in the ICC for maximum exposure. We were fortunate enough to have been invited by the long standing highly praised touring service company Major Adventures to share their stand with them.

Being at the Indaba at the very birth of our new venture was an adrenaline rush to say the least. We were amongst the “movers and shakers” and we really had to perform. We must say we were most pleased with our stand – light box illuminated photos (see our website home page and all) – which got an ongoing line of Indaba professionals and tourists stopping to chat with us and requesting that we build alliances with them. We were one of the little brothers/sisters of the place at the grownup dinner – we didn’t know how much we could speak for fear of putting a step wrong! But in hindsight – it’s just over a week since Indaba 2012 came to an end – we did ourselves proud.
